about
London/Glasgow alt-art-rock trio Dama Scout return with their first new music in over three years with new single 'dan dan bub', out now on Hand In Hive. Rooted in the murky territory of navigating our digital selves versus our real selves, it finds the trio - comprised of vocalist/guitarist Eva Liu, bassist Luciano Rossi and drummer Danny Grant - continuing to push their sonic boundaries, here trading in angular, disquieting, Lynchian guitar-pop.
It sees release today alongside a video that perfectly matches its unsettling brilliance, charting a middle ground between Eraserhead and Hieronymus Bosch. Of the song and video, the band offer: "dan dan bub is the raw tingling of a first trip outside after turning inside out. It's a drift down a river of hands, high fives and punches to the face, flipping you upside down like a woodlouse in a frying pan. It's an itch that scratches itself. The video is like an interview with a self-portrait. It turns the gaze inwards exposing brittle foundations, and as the ideal-self rots away a bulbous overlord leads us in a mesmeric ritual dance."
The band's previous EP dama scout (2018) garnered them a reputation for chaotic yet catchy soundscapes, where Liu’s pop vocals are juxtaposed with disorientating, jangly guitars and propulsive rhythms. In the process it drew rave write-ups from the likes of NME, NPR, DIY, Clash, The Line of Best Fit, Dork and more, alongside radio support including NTS, BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6Music, and shows with Weaves, Jay Som and Happyness. Now, this first taster of new material sees them stretch their creative muscles, further building upon their unique, individual tastes to bring together a world that’s ever-changing, infectious and brilliantly fresh. By pushing through the boundaries of genre, Dama Scout's constantly curious dive into contrasting sonic landscapes allows them to craft new terrain that takes its cues from East Asian pop and film. Keep your eyes peeled for more new music from them in the coming months.
lyrics
Crash crash into a capsule
Start pixelating
Interview memories again
Hide hide in my brain
Oh oh Oh oh
Side by side we walk uncertain terrified
Neither of us talk aloud
Do you think it’s so real
Carefully made out of marble
Cool and hateful eyes
Drown in the clouds
And I hope that you will someday too
Think of me maybe
Dressed in heavy spells
Drown in the clouds
Pocket future favourites
Hand in hand we look uncertain terrified
Hand in hand we look uncertain terrified
Hand in hand we look uncertain terrified
Neither of us sleep at night
Do you think it’s so real, carefully
Made out of marble
Cool and hateful eyes
Drown in the clouds
And I hope that you will someday too
Think of maybe
Dressed in heavy spells
Drown in the clouds

Dirtbag Transformation: "What is this?" was my first reaction. But what an amazing song. It reminds me a bit of the Pixies in how it pulls together dissonance and then resolves. malfunction54
Dammit every track makes me smile. How did you do that? If a friend recommends this album to you, hang on to them because they're just as fabulously messed up as you are. I'd like to thank my bank for allowing me to buy things online again. Thank you. Everyone. Thanks. duskbringer
